Ah, wouldn’t it be nice to have a super power? Those X-Men don’t know how good they’ve got it! Sure they keep crying “poor us” and claiming they’re discriminated against, but come on, is there anything cooler than being a mutant (with the possible exception of being a vampire, but that’s a whole other article)! I mean really, who are they kidding? Imagine being invited to a BBQ at Professor Xavier’s School for the Gifted! It’d go something like this…

You pull up outside the Mansion… sorry, the ‘School’… for the Gifted in your 1987 Mazda with a box of Cadbury Favourites (because the Professor told you not to bring a thing). Professor X’s home is so humungous you instantly start turning green with envy—which is possibly as close to being a mutant as you’ll ever get—before Magneto steps forward to greet you.

“Welcome (insert your name here),” Magneto says, promptly twisting the metal body of your Mazda into the shape of a Maserati.

“Wow!” you gush in awe, dropping your Favourites all over the driveway. “Do I get to keep the car?”

Magneto simply laughs maliciously before transforming your new Maserati into a rusty old Fiat Bambino. “Don’t be ridiculous, I just wanted to tease you before making you feel puny and powerless. Enjoy the party.”

Deflated you head through the house and find the BBQ in full swing in the backyard. Over by the fountain Colossus is using his shiny biceps to chat up the ladies. You feel like strutting over there and saying “You know, girls, he may have buns of steel (literally), but everyone knows tin men don’t have hearts!” But then again, his fists glint in the sunlight, so you think twice about it.

That’s when Jean Grey catches your eye. You stroll on over to talk to her, at which point she simply says, “Walk away, you’re not my type.” Strangely enough you find yourself walking away, mumbling to yourself, “Gee, she’s convincing!”

You try playing celebrity head with Mystique, but she’s no fun because she keeps accidentally morphing into the famous people you’re supposed to guess. Over at the barbie, Cyclops uses too much blaster ray and burns your sausages. And when you try to have a whinge to Nightcrawler that this is the worst party you’ve ever been to, he doesn’t just politely mutter something about mingling with the other guests… no, he teleports away from you!

‘Mutants,’ you think to yourself as you leave the party in your new rust-bucket. ‘Just as well they’re so good at saving the world, because they’re lousy at hosting BBQs!’

Movie Review: WASTED ON THE YOUNG

They say that youth is wasted on the young, but this movie was NOT wasted on me! I didn't know much about it going in, but this sensational little Aussie film is a riveting eye-opener to the concepts of love and power in today's youth. Everything relevant in the world of kids' today—the way they communicate, that notion of always being in contact with each other, but not really having any true emotional contact at all—is poured into the movie as a tense match between innocence and guilt is played out in a high school setting. One thing I loved was the complete absence of any adults whatsoever in this movie. These kids are the entire world of this film. This movie gets a solid 8 out of 10 from me!

#4 If you can hear it snort and smell its stinky unwashed battle-armour but you can’t see it, then it’s time to treat yourself to a day spa mud bath, quick smart. Not only will the mud conceal your body heat and prevent you from becoming predator prey, you’ll feel rejuvenated and relaxed all over.

#5 If you start building mountains out of mashed potatoes, start packing your bags. Chances are you’ll soon be boarding an alien mothership. Don’t forget to take lots of bottled water, there’s a good chance the plumbing system on board the ship is connected to a trash compactor.

#6 If the land dividing the United States from Mexico has been declared an alien ‘infected zone’, it’s not the time to do that road trip you’ve always dreamed of. Cancun ain’t that great.

#7 If you suspect your best friend may be one of those visitors just pretending to be friendly (when really all he or she wants to do is eat you), pull at an ear or nose to see if there’s any green scales underneath that fake human skin. If your friend screeches and slaps you, then you’re probably wrong. But hey, it’s better than going down a lizard’s gizzard!

I didn't have amazing hopes for this supernatural teen adventure, but I actually kinda liked it! The very sexy Alex Pettyfer plays a normal high school kid who turns out to be not so normal. Actually, he's Number 4, something he learns after his mentor discovers that Number 3 just got murdered and the forces of evil will now be coming after Number 4. They kill sequentially, and unless Number 4 can learn to harnass his newfound powers, he's next! I AM NUMBER 4 is based on a bestselling book series and will hopefully kick off a new movie franchise ala Harry Potter and Twilight. If Alex Pettyfer continues to star, I'll watch!

Well tonight the 2011 Gay and Lesbian Sydney Mardi Gras festival ends with the usual BANG, with the parade beginning at 7:30pm and the party afterwards. I love this time of year, the streets are so vibrant and festive and buzzing with gay tourists from all over the world. The festival lasts for 2 weeks and kickstarted this year with Queer Thinking, a day celebrating Gay Arts and Literature which I was very proud to be a part of for the second year running as judge of the Mardi Gras Short Story competition. And Cavill's casting isn't the only thing that's got us all excited! The new movie, entitled SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL, will be directed by Zack Snyder (300, WATCHMEN) and produced by Christopher Nolan (THE DARK KNIGHT, INCEPTION). Today's Life-lovin' Moment!

A few years ago I was doing a production job for a client. When I'm not writing novels I make ads and do creative stuff with brands, and for this particular job I was hired to sit in an edit suite for 2 days with a video editor and cut together a brand reel. Anyway, the first freelance editor on the job did NOT want to be there. He sat there for two hours complaining about the job and telling me that this gig was beneath him and that he was better than this (not thinking he was insulting me in the process, but hell, when you get a bread and butter gig you do it!) Anyway, after two hours this editor walked out on the job... when you're on a deadline to produce something, that is a HUGE professional no-no, it basically leaves everyone high and dry with a looming deadline and no editor.

Enter a fast replacement freelance editor named Kristian Anderson. For the next day and a half Kristian and I cut together one of the best reels I've ever produced. Not only was he fast and professional and skilled, he was also one of the NICEST people I have ever met in my life. You know how sometimes you just meet people and you think, you are a good person, why aren't there more people like you out there. He told me about his lovely wife and family and how he had just started his freelance career and wanted my advice on the freelance world to make sure he had made the right decision and could make enough money for his family. At the end of the session we swapped numbers, but unfortunately I haven't had reason to call on Kristian's skills since then.

Then the other day he popped up on the news.

A short time after I worked with him, Kristian was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer. Knowing that such a good person has to go through such a painful experience breaks my heart. But the reason Kristian was in the news was because he has turned this painful experience into a life-changing one. Below is a video he made for his wife's birthday telling her how much he loves her and thanking her for all her love and support during their trying time. Amazingly, Kristian somehow persuaded the New Zealand Prime Minister and even Hugh Jackman to appear in the video! Not only that, when Oprah came to Australia recently she was so moved by Kristian's video that she invited Kristian on the show and gave him and his wife a cheque for $250,000 so they wouldn't have to worry about money while they go through this experience together.

This isn't a story about fame or being given a truckload of money, it's about passing on the good stuff. Whenever Oprah does something generous, she does it in the hope that generosity—or kindness or hope or a good twist of Fate—is passed on down the line, no matter how big or small it is. It's tragic that a guy as nice as Kristian has been struck with cancer, but he put his story of love and strength and hope out there, then Hugh Jackman made it bigger, then Oprah made it bigger still. So hopefully others will find love and strength and hope too. I guess that's the point of this post: pass on the good stuff, pass on hope.

I only met Kristian because I had to first work with a guy who was the complete opposite of Kristian. A good twist of Fate. I wish Kristian and his family well!

Okay, here's the thing about CATFISH. You have to go in knowing virtually nothing about the movie... which makes reviewing it kinda hard. Having said that, telling you the basic set-up won't spoil anything. In a nutshell, it's a doco made by two guys, Rel and Henry, who use Rel's brother Nev as their subject as he begins a Facebook relationship with a young girl who is something of an artistic genius. Nev himself is a photographer, and he and the young girl strike up a genuine friendship. When Nev is introduced (online) to the young girl's family, he ends up falling in love (online) with the young girl's older sister, Megan.

That's all I'm gonna say about the plot of the movie. But trust me, this film is fantastic!! It's so utterly compelling and holds up so many mirrors to the world we've created for ourselves. If THE SOCIAL NETWORK was about starting up Facebook, then CATFISH is the movie that shows us the effects of Facebook—socially, personally, emotionally.

Some people have questioned the authenticity of the doco, whether it's real or not. The filmmakers stand by their claim that its completely authentic. To be honest, it doesn't really matter. This film raises so many real issues and delivers its message so well that it proves to be must-see filmmaking regardless of whether it's real or not! I'm giving CATFISH 9 out of 10!

I love this song! Clare Bowditch is one of Australia's most talented singer-songwriters. She's gorgeous and clever and honest, and when you listen to the lyrics of this song you get such a sense of regret, of a story of success that went sour once money got involved and dreams died. When I was in my mid-teens, I remember slinking up to a newsstand in the middle of the city and buying my first Playgirl Magazine, handing over my hard-earned cash with a trembling hand. It was the March 1986 issue, and centerfold Phil Barone was pretty much the hottest man I had ever laid eyes on. Even now I think his centerfold photos depict one helluva gorgeous male specimen!

Unfortunately while sourcing some of these hunky classic pics, I stumbled across this: a Florida mugshot of Phil from late last year, aged 51. Beauty really does fade, time marches on, but I'll always remember that day at the newsstand. Thanks for the memories, Phil!

Is it a horror film? Is it a tragedy? Is it a drama about family and belonging? Is it a cautionary tale about science and humanity? Like FRANKENSTEIN before it, SPLICE is all of the above, and it succeeds admirably. Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley (two of the best actors of their generation) play a super-scientist couple who want to prove their ability to splice human DNA, but without the nod from the corporate sector and the scientific community, they decide to do it on the quiet. When they succeed, it becomes inevitable that their paternal instincts begin to kick in and their subject becomes more of a daughter to them... until her rapid growth shows signs of instability and danger. To quote Jeff Goldblum in JURASSIC PARK, "Just because we could, doesn't mean we should." Packed with thrills, suspense, tenderness, sadness and lots of food for thought, SPLICE gets a very enthusiastic 9 out of 10 from me!

Movies You've Never Heard Of - Reviewed!

Wow!! I watched a movie last night called FROM BEGINNING TO END and it totally blew me away! It's a Brazilian movie about two half-brothers who grow up so close that they become completely interdependent and eventually fall in love. It sounds like such a taboo, as though it's a story told merely for shock value, but I found it to be the complete opposite.

At once risky and romantic, intimate and erotic, sexy and sincere, this is a tale of true love that is both heart-breaking and heart-soaring. The acting was fantastic, and although it's not the perfect film in terms of structure, it's still a poetic piece of art with an unconventional romance at the heart of it. I loved this movie so much that as soon as it ended I immediately wanted to watch it again.

FROM BEGINNING TO END gets a very enthusiastic 9 out of 10 from me. Prepare to leave your sense of traditional social mores at the door and immerse yourself in this one!
